Literacy Learning Cart
Jessica Neal: Literacy Cart Since receiving this grant, fourth grade students at TES have been able to look at reading and writing in a different way! They have been exposed to a number of different manipulatives that they would not have otherwise had the chance to experience. For example, one fourth grade teacher has utilized a pack of nonfiction comprehension cards. These cards each have a short nonfiction passage for students to read. After reading this passage, they read three or four questions and select the appropriate response. In another fourth grade classroom, students have had the chance to play a board game that focuses on a specific skill. Kids find learning about main idea through a board game a lot more interesting than reading passage after passage and answering questions! Finally, in another fourth grade classroom, students have had the chance to work on fluency through a listening station. Fluency is one of the most important building blocks of reading and mastery with this skill will help students in many other areas of their reading. Students are able to use these materials in small groups and occasionally as a whole class. Without this grant, our students would be missing out on a number of the great materials that are available to them to help them become better readers. Thank you Education Foundation for Tyngsborough!
